Back to School

It's been awhile since I've posted - partially because it's summer, and partially because it's been hard to know what to say. This pandemic world that we are living in is crazy! This week, my school district announced its plans* to start the year in a hybrid model. Both before and after, I have seen an outpouring of thoughts (some nicer than others) on social media, on the news, and in my very own inbox. Some people are happy; other are upset. I know the same story is playing out in school districts across the nation, and in some instances, the world.

No matter how anyone feels about how schools are reopening in the fall, I would just ask that we all keep this saying in mind.

In a world where you can be anything, be KIND.

Be kind to the teacher who is terrified to go back into their classroom.
Be kind to the student who hates wearing a mask.
Be kind to the superintendent who is carrying a lot of weight on their shoulders right now.
Be kind to the parent who is desperately trying to figure out what the best situation will be for their family.
Be kind to the team who is frantically trying to answer every question, only to come up with 100 more.

Be kind to the people who disagree with you.
Be kind to the people who have a different perspective.

I would also encourage us to be thoughtful about how to make the best of a challenging situation for ALL students. This summer, there has been a greater recognition of racial inequality in this country. Are we still holding onto that perspective as we plan for the fall?

How are the plans serving all kids, especially those who are historically disadvantaged?

At a time when many parents with means are supplementing their students' education, how are we reaching those who don't have those options?

Are all voices being heard in any feedback process? How are we reaching those who speak a different language or don't have Internet?

There is no doubt, this is HARD. There is no perfect solution, but I have to believe that people are doing the best they can. And it will take all of us, the whole community, coming together to create the best outcome possible. So, please...

Be kind. Be inclusive. Be human.

Remember, the kids are watching!
